Chinese opera is an ancient and diverse art form. Peking opera, Kunqu opera, and Cantonese opera stand out as the three most representative styles, each showcasing the profound heritage and regional diversity of Chinese culture. Tonight’s performance will bring together and present the distinctive features of these three major styles to the audience. The talk will be followed by a live musical performance – a truly rare and unmissable opportunity.
Peking Opera: Melodies of Ancient China – Traditions and Trends in Chinese Opera
Han Yijia traces the evolution of Peking Opera, highlighting how the "Four Great Dan Actors" (Mei Lanfang, Cheng Yanqiu, Shang Xiaoyun, and Xun Huisheng) exemplified artistic allure through their distinctive styles and codified performance techniques. Chinese opera shares an aesthetic of "lyrical abstraction" with traditional Chinese culture, a quality equally manifested in classical Chinese painting. She explores the principle of "Chinese Learning as Substance, Western Learning as Application" and how Peking Opera navigates the confluence of Eastern and Western cultural and artistic exchanges.
Kunqu Opera: Giving the Past a Future – A Journey Through Time with Kunqu Opera
Through classical masterpieces The Peony Pavillion and The Palace of Eternal Youth, Zhang Jun traces the evolution of Kunqu Opera and explores how AI intersects with contemporary Kunqu Opera pieces.
Cantonese Opera: The Essence and Beauty of Hong Kong’s Cantonese Opera
"Zhaojun Going Abroad" is a classic song written by Cantonese Opera Master Ma Shizeng and a representative repertoire piece of Hong Xiannu. We are honoured to have Ms. Guo Fengnu, an inheritor of the "Hong" School, perform this repertoire today. Her performance not only retains the essence of the original singing voice but also showcases her own distinct artistic characteristics. Dr. Sammi Li Yu, the granddaughter of Cantonese Opera Master Pak Kui Wing, has been invited to highlight the four core elements of Cantonese opera: "singing, acting, reciting, and fencing." In addition, she will introduce the audience to Cantonese opera music, encompassing "wind, pluck, string, and percussion." This event celebrates the essence and beauty of Hong Kong's Cantonese opera, shaped by Western cultural influences.
