Modernity and Tradition: The Architecture of Chang Chao Kang

The exhibition introduces the architecture of Chang Chao Kang completed in Taiwan and Hong Kong during the 1950s and 1960s. The series of campus architecture Chang designed for Tunghai University in Taichung, together with I.M. Pei and C.K. Chen, as well as his subsequent works in Taipei and Hong Kong, are considered among the best of post-war modern Chinese architecture in the region. These works not only reflect the typological and material tradition of the places, but also demonstrate excellent integration of spatial form with tectonic precision.
The exhibition includes two parts:
Part I, Modern Eye: The Centennial Exhibition of Architect Chang Chao Kang, introduces the career, works, and cultural context of the architect.
Curated by Ming Song Shyu with his team originally produced in Taiwan, coordinated by Wallace Chang with 1a Space, exhibition at HKU installed by Benjamin Yiu with students from MArch (Design).
Part II, Typology, Tectonic and Topography: C.K. Chang 1954-1965, presents the spatial form and tectonic study of the eight selected projects designed by the architect.
Curated by Weijen Wang, model and panels produced by Ruiji Zhu, based on drawings by HKU students for the course work of ARCH7184 led by Weijen Wang and Wallace Chang in 2019.
